I remember bending over a looping pedal drenched in sweat one summer evening as I worked on this in my old basement.

The final piece is culled from a much larger chunk of music--something approaching 30 or 40 minutes worth. This was the first time I really intuitively found myself making way more sound than I needed toward the end of editing it down and stitching it together later. There was a part of me that resisted that approach as somehow inauthentic, as if allowing myself any wiggle room in "post" was faking it. The fact that I liked how this turned out opened me up to way more fakery and flexibility on this and subsequent pieces.
